Brenda Currier
Recovery Life Coach
I am trained in habit change and have a Master of Science in Addiction Counseling to support people struggling with substance and alcohol use issues who desire to understand what leads to the habits that cause trouble.
My coaching approach comes from experience in private practice, outpatient and residential treatment settings for drug and alcohol addiction which gives a sound basis for habit change coaching.

The Difference Between Counseling & Coaching
Addiction counseling and recovery coaching are both important components of the support system for individuals dealing with substance use disorders, but they serve different purposes and involve different approaches.
Addiction Counseling:
-
Professional Background: Addiction counselors are typically licensed professionals with training in psychology, social work, or counseling. They often hold degrees and certifications specific to addiction treatment.
-
Therapeutic Focus: Counseling often involves therapeutic techniques to address the psychological aspects of addiction. This can include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and other evidence-based practices.
-
Diagnosis and Treatment: Counselors can diagnose co-occurring mental health disorders and provide treatment plans that may include therapy sessions, group therapy, and referrals to other services.
-
Structured Sessions: Counseling sessions are usually structured and may follow a specific treatment protocol. The focus is on understanding the underlying issues of addiction and developing coping strategies.
-
Confidentiality and Ethics: Counselors adhere to strict ethical guidelines and confidentiality laws, ensuring a safe space for clients to discuss their issues.
Recovery Coaching:
-
Certified Peer Support: Recovery life coaches are often individuals in recovery themselves who have been trained to support others in their recovery journey. They may or may not have formal counseling training.
-
Goal-Oriented: The focus of recovery life coaching is on setting and achieving personal goals related to recovery. Coaches help clients develop practical strategies for maintaining sobriety and improving their overall quality of life.
-
Motivation and Accountability: Coaches provide motivation, encouragement, and accountability, helping clients navigate challenges and stay committed to their recovery plans.
-
Flexible Approach: Recovery coaching is generally less formal than counseling and can be more flexible in terms of meeting times and locations. It may include phone calls, texts, or in-person meetings.
-
Confidentiality and Ethics: Credentialed coaches are professionals who have met stringent education and experience requirements, and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession. Additionally, they adhere to strict ethical guidelines to protect and serve coaching clients.
